Example: on a grid map, the school is at (1, 2) and home at (4, 6), with 1 km blocks. What is the straight-line distance? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Distance (d)
- The length of the segment between the two points, in a straight line.
- Root of the Sum of Squares
- Δx = x₂ − x₁ and Δy = y₂ − y₁ are the legs of a right triangle, and the distance is the hypotenuse: Pythagoras' theorem. The points at a distance r from a centre (a, b) form the circle (x − a)² + (y − b)² = r².
