Markov's Inequality

Example: the average income in a city is $3,000. Knowing nothing else about the distribution, at most what share of people can earn $15,000 or more? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Chance of High Values (P(X ≥ a))
- The probability that the variable reaches a or goes beyond it. Markov gives a ceiling for it, not the exact value.
- Mean (E[X])
- The only information the inequality needs, besides the variable never being negative.
- Threshold (a)
- The larger the threshold, the lower the ceiling. With a equal to 5 times the mean, at most 20% of the values get there.
