Example: a machine should fill bags with 500 g. In a sample of 25 bags, the mean was 496 g with a standard deviation of 8 g. Is the machine out of adjustment? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- t Statistic
- The test statistic that measures how many standard errors the sample mean is from the hypothesized mean. Used when the population standard deviation is unknown and the sample is small.
- Sample Mean (x̄)
- The mean computed from the sample. It is the estimate of the population parameter based on the observed data.
- Hypothesized Mean (μ₀)
- The value of the mean under the null hypothesis (H₀). It is the value we are testing the population mean against.
- Sample Standard Deviation (s)
- The standard deviation computed from the sample. It estimates the population standard deviation when that is unknown.
- Square Root of n (√n)
- The square root of the sample size. Together with the sample standard deviation, it forms the standard error of the mean (s/√n), which measures how much the sample mean varies.
