Example: in a batch of 50 parts, 5 are defective. The inspector draws 10 parts without replacement. What is the chance of finding exactly 1 defective? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Probability (P(X = k))
- The chance that a sample of n items, drawn without replacement, contains exactly k successes.
- Successes Chosen (C(K, k))
- How many ways there are to choose the k successes out of the K in the population.
- Failures Chosen (C(N − K, n − k))
- How many ways there are to fill the rest of the sample with n − k items from the N − K that are not successes.
- All Samples (C(N, n))
- How many samples of n items there are in all. Since they are all equally likely, the probability is favorable cases over possible cases.
