Example: a call center receives an average of 4 calls per minute. What is the chance that exactly 6 arrive in a minute? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Probability of k Occurrences
- The probability that the event happens exactly 'k' times in an interval.
- Mean Rate (λ) to the Power k
- Lambda (λ) is the mean rate at which the event occurs. This term scales the rate to the specific number of occurrences 'k'.
- Exponential of the Negative Mean Rate
- Euler's number (e) raised to -λ. This term is the probability of no occurrences, the base of the calculation.
- k Factorial
- The factorial of the number of occurrences 'k'. It normalizes the distribution, accounting for the different ways the 'k' occurrences can be arranged.
