Example: a bus comes every 20 minutes, and you reach the stop without checking the timetable. What is the chance of waiting between 5 and 12 minutes? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Density (f(x))
- Constant between a and b and zero outside: no value in the interval is likelier than another.
- One in the Numerator
- The total area under the density must be 1, the certainty that the value lands somewhere.
- Width of the Interval (b − a)
- The wider the interval, the lower the density, so the area stays 1. The chance of a stretch is its width divided by b − a.
