Example: a company wants to estimate the average salary by interviewing 200 employees. It has three departments: operations (1,000 people, standard deviation of $300), administration (400 people, $800) and management (100 people, $3,000). How many should be interviewed in each? Change the values to work out your own case.
Step by step
What each term means
- Sample of Stratum h (nₕ)
- The sample size to draw from a specific stratum 'h'. It is the value the formula computes.
- Total Sample Size (n)
- The total number of individuals in the final sample, adding up the samples of all strata.
- Population of Stratum h (Nₕ)
- The total number of individuals in stratum 'h' of the population.
- Standard Deviation of Stratum h (σₕ)
- The standard deviation of the variable of interest within stratum 'h'. Strata with more variability get a larger sample.
- Weighted Sum (Σ Nₕσₕ)
- The sum of each stratum's population size (Nₕ) times its standard deviation (σₕ), over all strata. It works as a normalizing factor.
